The Air NZ Accordion Orchestra held their 30 year Reunion at the Takapuna War Memorial Hall in Takapuna, Auckland, New Zealand on August 1st, 2026. The event celebrated tours from 1979 to 1996 with a performance of “Swinging Safari” (conducted by Gary Daverne), an historic quiz by quiz master Ian Masefield, a display of photos and memorabilia (on loan from the Dargaville Museum “Accordion Gems” exhibition), and a performance of “Land of Maui” by Stephanie, Sharon and Erica.

All three directors attended – Fay Schaw, Harley Jones and Heather Masefield. The nine tours represented were 1979 (USA), 1981 (Europe), 1984 (Canada and USA), 1986 (Europe), 1988 (Brisbane and China), 1990 (USA), 1992 (Europe), 1994 (USA), and 1996 (Europe).

AIRNZ Swinging Safari conducted by Gary Daverne

Special mention must go to all that relearnt parts for Swinging Safari under the baton of Gary Daverne. Stephanie Poole, Sharon Marshall Simpson and Erica Knights sang and played Land of Maui renditions that had us all taking part – amazing how we could recall the words.

The Trivial Game run by Ian Masefield was a hilarious success, A fascinating recount of our history of fundraising, performances and tours. The singing of favourite orchestral pieces was the unexpected icing on the cake.

Thank you to the Dargaville Museum for loan of the historical material on permanent loan. Imagine how surprised they were to have more arrive back than was leant out (gowns and uniforms donated).
