On May 2nd, 2025, students and graduates of Prof. Grzegorz Stopa’s accordion class at the MUK (Music and Arts University Vienna) once again demonstrated their already exquisite skills, giving an interested audience an insight into the current state of development of the accordion in solo and duo playing, as well as in chamber music ensembles.
Jingyang Wang (China) just last week achieved an outstanding second place at the international accordion competition “Akkordeon Grenzenlos 2025” in Trossingen. She now impressed again with her final program of Kalevi Aho’s Sonata No. 2 (3rd movement: “Strange Birds”) and her own arrangement of Jianzhong Wang’s “LiuYang River.”

Kiia-Maria Piispa from Finland presented the first two movements of Magnus Lindberg’s “Accordion Jubilees,” before the trio of Julia Schneckenleitner (saxophone), Pia Madlener (accordion), and Johannes Duntze (double bass) delighted the audience with Manuel de Falla’s “Spanish Dance No. 1” from “La Vida Breve.”

Marta Cubas Hondal from Spain has won multiple prizes in international competitions and will complete her studies at the MUK this year. Her varied program included works by Bach (Well-Tempered Clavier, Prelude and Fugue in B-flat minor, BWV 867), Penderecki (Sinfonietta, 1st movement Allegro molto), Rameau (Les Cyclopes), and Turina (Orgía).
Paul Hindemith’s Sonata Op. 11 No. 4 was originally composed for viola and piano in 1919. Today, it is also played in a version for saxophone and accordion. Yingshuo Ma and Marta Cubas Hondal were the convincing interpreters of the finale (with variations) of this sonata.

Katerina Tumova impressed with Bach (Well-Tempered Clavier, Prelude and Fugue in A-flat major, BWV 862) and Scarlatti (Sonata in F minor, K 386).
Maurice Ravel created an apotheosis of the Viennese waltz for two pianos with “La Valse.” Yilin Han (already a MUK graduate) and Piotr Motyka insisted on arranging a brilliant version of this work for two accordions and performing it in a magnificent finale to this class evening.

The next class recital for Prof. Grzegorz Stopa’s accordion class will take place at the MUK on May 26th, 2025 at 6:30 p.m.
