The Australian Accordion Teachers’ Association (AATA) proudly celebrated the 31st edition of its flagship event, the Australian International Accordion Championships and Festival, held on June 7th and 8th, 2025, at the Five Dock RSL Auditorium in Sydney. This anticipated event attracted accordionists from Australia and internationally, uniting performers, educators, and enthusiasts in a celebration of music, culture, and artistry.
The two-day festival featured a program of competitive performances, masterclasses, and concerts by internationally renowned guest artists. The festival culminated in a spectacular Gala Concert to a full house, highlighting the international flair and artistry that have come to define the AATA festival.

While the festival’s primary aim remains supporting young Australian accordion students in developing their competitive and performance skills, the event has grown into a highly regarded platform for international performers. Its welcoming atmosphere and professional standards have attracted participants from as far as South Korea and China, offering a prestigious alternative to larger European and Asian festivals.
This year’s coveted title of 2025 Australian International Champion was awarded to He Ziming, who impressed the adjudicating panel with a standout performance.
The festival featured several guest artists, including:
- Wenyi Wu (China), a renowned concert artist whose students also achieved top honors in multiple competition categories, highlighting her dual role as a performer and educator.
- Accordion Art (South Korea), led by Alex Sheykin, captivated audiences with a spirited program that included Korean folk music, with standout performances by vocalist Park Sungwan.
- Polish artists Elwira Śliwkiewicz-Cisak and Szymon Chołomiej, who presented an eclectic mix of Piazzolla, jazz, and contemporary accordion works.

A memorable feature of the Gala Concert was the world premiere of Chołomiej’s original composition, AATA2025, composed in tribute to the festival.
AATA President, Tatjana Marx extended her gratitude to all participants and supporters, and issued a heartfelt invitation to accordionists worldwide to join the 2026 Australian International Accordion Championships, set to take place on June 6th and 7th, 2026 in Sydney.
“We look forward to welcoming musicians from around the world to another fantastic weekend of fun, friendship, and music as we continue to celebrate the rich tradition of the accordion,” said Marx.
