The City of Castelfidardo is in mourning for the sudden death of Mirco Soprani in Italy.
Mirco Soprani, the former Mayor of Castelfidardo, Italy, and a significant figure in the accordion industry has passed away. In the early hours of April 5th, 2025, he fell ill, at the age of 65, in his home in Recanati, where he lived with his wife. His contributions to both the cultural and musical heritage of the region were notable. He was the editor of the “Strumenti&Musica” magazine for almost 20 years.
Mirco Soprani served as the Mayor of Castelfidardo from 2006 to 2016. In February 2019, after 21 years of active political involvement, he stepped down from the city council and announced his retirement from active politics. During his farewell, he humorously remarked, “Big Ben has said stop,” reflecting on his long tenure.
Beyond his political career, Mirco Soprani played a vital role in promoting the accordion industry in Castelfidardo. The town is renowned worldwide as a center for accordion manufacturing, a legacy that began with Paolo Soprani, who established the first Italian accordion company in 1863. The International Accordion Museum in Castelfidardo showcases this rich history, housing a collection of accordions and related artifacts.
In 2012, Mirco Soprani, in his capacity as mayor, co-presented the “Paolo Soprani” prize alongside Vincenzo Canali, President of the International Accordion Museum. This award recognized significant contributions to the accordion world, highlighting the town’s deep connection to the instrument.
His dedication to both the cultural and musical heritage of Castelfidardo has left an indelible mark on the community, ensuring that the town remains celebrated for its rich history in accordion craftsmanship.
The Casa del Commiato “Alba Nova” on via Bramante will be open from Sunday at 11.00am.
The last farewell to Mirco will be held on Monday April 7th at 3pm in the Chiesa Collegiata (Collegiate Church).
