The VAC Awards are hosted annually by the Variety Artists Club of New Zealand (VAC). Established in 1966, the VAC is New Zealand’s premier association for entertainers and performing artists, committed to fostering community support, professionalism, and excellence in New Zealand’s entertainment industry.
The awards celebrate contributions to New Zealand’s entertainment industry, recognizing both performers and key supporters. Core awards highlight excellence across various entertainment fields, including categories for top male and female artists, musicians, children’s entertainers, and groups, and feature the Benny Award, the highest honor that can be awarded to a New Zealand variety performer. Each year, the Benny Awards bring together artists to recognize their peers for lifetime achievements and outstanding contributions to the arts.
The Gary Daverne Classical Music Award, founded and sponsored by acclaimed composer and conductor Gary Daverne, is in its third year and was previously awarded to violinist Amalia Hall and pianist Shan Liu.
This year’s recipient is Grayson Masefield, a world-renowned accordionist celebrated for his exceptional artistry and contributions to the classical and contemporary accordion repertoire. The award marks a significant recognition within the New Zealand classical music scene, with Masefield now joining the ranks of other honorees, including the Jones Family, who were awarded the VAC Scroll of Honour in 1998.
The VAC’s dedication to promoting public goodwill towards New Zealand’s entertainment industry and encouraging cooperation among artists aligns closely with the vision of Gary Daverne, whose sponsorship of this award highlights his commitment to nurturing classical music talent across the nation.
