Santiago, Chile – Chilean accordionist Joaquín Muñoz Donoso has just released his latest musical project, Las Medallitas de Oro.
This double album is a tribute to cueca brava, a lively and traditional folk style from Santiago, Chile. The album, available on all digital platforms, features an impressive ensemble of Chilean musicians and captures the essence of the vibrant cueca brava tradition, particularly the energetic canto a la rueda—a communal singing style gaining popularity among Chilean youth.
After winning three gold medals at the ATG Accordion Festival, Joaquín received a special recording session from AudioMusica, which inspired him to assemble a dream team of musicians he has long admired in the cueca brava community. The result is an album that both honors and modernizes this beloved Chilean musical genre.
Las Medallitas de Oro is a two-part album comprising 27 cuecas. The first section features 13 traditional cuecas, with the sound of harp and 18th-century influences that evoke the warmth of family gatherings. The second section, made up of 14 tracks, introduces the saxophone for a more experimental, contemporary sound, blending the classic with the modern.
In addition to its digital release, Las Medallitas de Oro is accompanied by a special YouTube video showcasing the full recording session. The album will also be available as a limited edition double vinyl.
“I hope people dance, listen, enjoy, and get thirsty for more,” said Joaquín, with palpable enthusiasm. He added, “This was an incredible experience, and I hope the music inspires the same intensity and joy it brought to the studio.”
Joaquín, who also directs the Entre Fuelles Foundation, expressed his gratitude to the musicians involved in the project, praising their professionalism and dedication. He added, “This album is an invitation to experience Chilean music in its purest form and to celebrate the rich tradition of cueca brava.”
