When Johnny Young took the stage to present this year’s Happy Music Award, he described the recipient as someone who has been accused of “having an idea every minute.” But of all the ideas that Norman Seaton has generated over the years, one stands above the rest — and its impact has been felt by hundreds of accordionists over four decades. “While not every idea has come to fruition,” Young noted in his presentation speech, “there is one that has done so and has continued to inspire, teach, and entertain hundreds of accordionists over a span of 40 years. This weekend, you are enjoying the results of this inspiration: the National Accordion Association!”
An Unlikely Beginning Norman Seaton’s path to the accordion world was anything but direct. As a young man, music played a modest role in his life — he played trombone in his high school and college bands, but a career deeply intertwined with music was not something he anticipated. After serving in the Air Force, Seaton pursued his education with remarkable dedication, earning an Associate’s degree, a Bachelor’s degree, and an MBA, before completing a Doctor of Education with a focus on teaching computer technology. For more than 40 years he has served as a faculty member at Dallas College, where he remains active today, still developing new ideas for improving education.
Then came the accordion. Norman had married Sharon, a pianist, and one evening the couple decided to try out a local German restaurant called Papa Joe’s. The moment they walked through the door, Norman’s attention was immediately captured. “There’s an accordion!” he exclaimed — and not just one, but two accordionists performing that night. His only prior encounter with the instrument had been a woman who played one at his church, and the sound brought a rush of warm memories. Intrigued, he struck up a conversation with the duo and discovered that an accordion studio was located practically around the corner from their home. Norman and Sharon paid a visit, met the owner, and before long both of them had signed up for lessons.
From Student to Organizer Norman did take accordion lessons for a time, but it quickly became clear that his truest passion lay not so much in mastering the instrument himself as in connecting people who played it. He wanted to bring accordionists together — to play, to socialize, and to learn from one another. The idea that took root was characteristically bold: why not build an organization for accordion enthusiasts?
The National Accordion Association
From those garage-band beginnings, the National Accordion Association was born. For the very first activity, Seaton organized an accordion workshop and secured a clinician of national stature: Anthony Galla-Rini, a celebrated accordion figure from the San Diego area. It was an early signal of the ambition and reach that would come to define the NAA. Seaton has served as the organization’s President ever since, guiding it through four decades of growth while drawing on the help and wisdom of many collaborators along the way.
Forty Years of Inspiration What Seaton built from a simple idea has grown into a thriving community that serves accordionists at every level of experience. The NAA has brought players together, encouraged them to deepen their knowledge of the instrument, and inspired them to share the accordion with audiences who might never
have encountered it otherwise. Through it all, Norman and Sharon have been at the center of it — forging lasting friendships and continuing to play and grow alongside the community they helped create.

Happy Music Center Honors Norman Seaton as a Happy Music Ambassador
In recognition of this extraordinary contribution to accordion culture, Norman Seaton has been appointed a Happy Music Ambassador — a fitting title for a man whose single best idea has been making people happy, one accordion at a time.
In a ceremony befitting the occasion, Johnny Young, President of the Happy Music Center, formally presented Norman Seaton with the Happy Music Ambassadors Trophy and Plaque. Speaking before an audience of fellow music enthusiasts, Young captured the essence of Seaton’s contribution with characteristic warmth:
