Collectivo’s inaugural concert, “The Dance,” held at Brisbane’s Thomas Dixon Centre, brought together a diverse program of dance-inspired works, led by renowned oboist Tania Frazer. This ensemble of leading New Zealand and Australian musicians, showcased pieces that spanned from classical to contemporary, engaging the audience with a range of moods and styles. The program’s depth highlighted the collective’s aim to blend classical precision with dance’s expressive vitality.

Amalia Hall & Jonny Van Gend were delightfully dynamic while playing Wienawski’s Études, Caprices for two violins. Whilst Hall’s violin tumbled and soared, Van Gend’s spiralled circuitously to create a delicious frothy milkshake of music ending with a cheeky pluck.” Dr Gemma Regan

Masefield’s solo performance was particularly memorable, as the review highlighted his “ability to transcend the instrument’s traditional boundaries,” infusing the accordion with a “remarkable emotional depth.” His command over both dynamic control and expressive subtlety brought warmth and vibrancy to the performance, resonating strongly with the audience.” Dr Gemma Regan

Looking ahead, Collectivo has plans for a 2025 season that promises to further explore the intersection of classical music and dance across Queensland. With an international lineup that seeks to captivate new audiences, Collectivo aims to deepen its impact on the Australian chamber music scene. You can read the full review by Dr Gemma Regan here.
