20 Years Shanghai Accordion History

The 8th Shanghai International Accordion Culture & Art Week (2026 “Shanghai Spring”) runs from March 30 to April 6, 2026, in Changning District, featuring international artists from six countries alongside Yangtze River Delta performers. Highlights include a gala concert at Hongqiao Art Center, pop-up performances at Hongqiao Airport, and performances at Shanghai Zoo.

An exciting final accordion promotion and performance was organised at the Shanghai Zoo.

When the rhythm of the accordion meets the fun of the natural world, an immersive music feast took place 2026 at the Shanghai Zoo. You could smell the birds and flowers and wildlife on lakes while listening to romantic melodies by young accordionists.

The weather was perfect with large crowds attending the zoo including a large contingent of media reporting the accordionists performance at various venues around the zoo. The animals often came to watch as well. One reporter wrote: “In the arms of nature at Shanghai Zoo, let the accordion chime with the birds and the animals, break the boundaries between art and nature, immerse yourself in the perfect encounter between music and ecology, and unlock a different kind of artistic experience in spring.”

“The double experience of a pop-up concert” was fun and a “park flash performance” by a number of young performers who love the accordion, using their young fingertips to play the melody of children’s fun bought alive the flamingo area, the small panda area and other checkpoints in the zoo. A show of accordion art force out in the community.

The concert performer list included:
1. Sun Jingy and Huang Shuheng duet.
2. Quartet of Zhang Haoran, Zhou Yue Jia, Xia Youting, Yilang Xu.
3. Jingrui Fong, Shigeru Shih duet.
4. Tico Tico performed by Yixin Shi and Yancheng Li and then joined by international accordionist Grayson Masefield.
5. Tatiana Litunova performance with Korg Midi accordion who was then joined by Grayson Masefield to complete the concert performing Tango for Claude.

The 2026 Shanghai Spring 8th International Accordion Culture and Arts Week has wrapped up with another very successful event, marking a milestone in the city’s ongoing efforts to bring accordion music to a wider audience. This year’s program delivered a vibrant showcase of the instrument’s versatility, drawing enthusiastic participation from residents, musicians, and cultural organizations.

The event highlighted a remarkable fusion of musical traditions, featuring performances that blended Chinese folk styles with classical repertoire, contemporary compositions, and folk music from around the world. Audiences were treated to an impressive demonstration of the accordion’s expressive range — an instrument capable of shifting effortlessly from delicate nuance to powerful, modern soundscapes.

Organizers have been widely praised for their meticulous planning, creative programming, and commitment to cultural exchange. Special recognition goes to the dedicated team of accordion volunteers who supported the week’s activities with exceptional skill and professionalism, contributing significantly to the event’s smooth execution and warm community reception.

Their collective efforts helped transform this year’s festival into a standout cultural celebration for Shanghai Changning District and a memorable moment for accordion enthusiasts everywhere.
